Old School Joe: Percolator Coffee

I love coffee. It's really my only vice. (Unless you count poultry and goat ownership as a vice, which I sometimes do.)

I also really love old things. Which explains why my house and belongings look the way they do. Mr. Chanclas also loves old things. This is his favorite old thing (not counting his wife):

I just love to imagine the back story of all of my old things. Old stuff has a story to tell and it's often well-made. (If it weren't it wouldn't still be around, would it?) I just inherited this wonderful Corning Ware electric coffee percolator. Isn't it pretty? I'm drinking my first cup of coffee from it and I have to admit that it's a little bit burnt but it would be perfect for camping. It does require electricity but most camping spaces have an electrical outlet and I'm not against using it.

Coffee percolators were invented in the early 1800's and were very popular until the early 1970's when automatic drip coffee makers came out. The nice thing about a percolator is that it doesn't require a paper filter. Some, like this electric one, have their own heat source, but others are for stovetop use.

Does anybody else have a sweet spot for percolated coffee? I'm going to keep using mine and see if I can perfect my method.

  1. I love good coffee. No expensive stuff, not Starbucks or other trendy coffee places. I love good, perked, old fashioned, back of the woodstove, over a flame during a storm, perked coffee. I have the old fashioned coffee pot, no electricity needed. It takes longer but it's worth the extra 15 minutes.

  2. I've never had percolated coffee! Somehow I think I'd love it.

  3. I haven't percolated coffee, either. I am a HUGE Starbucks junkie but I also make my espresso at home. I've burned through several pump machines and my new one is set to arrive today. I'm so excited!! And so is my pocketbook!! (been spendin' way too much at the old Harbucks this past month....)
I seriously need to road trip down to Texas and come see you guys. If only to take a very stylistic photo lounged across your H's awesome car!!

  4. The Corning Ware Electromatics like yours make wonderful coffee, but use it cautiously! All of the series with the chrome spout like this were RECALLED in 1979. The handle can suddenly come off and you get doused with scalding coffee. Many folks were actually injured by this back in the day. Also I believe it is illegal to sell one now. See, for example:

    1. Thanks! My mom warned me that the handle had fallen off of one of my grandparents' other percolators (exactly as you described). I will be careful!

    2. I still use mine sometimes too, as the coffee is great and it's easy to clean, but I'm careful how I pick it up!
Another approach to great old-school coffee is the Sunbeam Coffeemasters from the 1930's-60's, models C-30, C-40, C-50. They are the vacuum type with an upper and lower chamber and have the same auto shut-off and keep-warm feature as the Corning. The coffee is absolutely spectacular. If you ever spot one in a thrift shop in good shape and with the metal-screen filter (so no annoying cloth filters) for around $20-$25, go for it!!
